Kanellos296
Kanellos, Nicolás and Helvetia
Martell. Hispanic Periodicals in the United States, Origins to 1960. Houston, Texas: Arte Público, 2000.

This seminal publication is a brief history and comprehensive bibliography of Spanish-language newspapers published throughout the United States from the nineteen century until the 1960s. This book is part of the “Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage” scholarly program whose main objective is to recover the often neglected—and at times hidden— literary, historical and intellectual legacy of the Hispanic community in English-speaking North America from colonial times to the decade of the 60s.

The book is divided in two parts: a brief history and a comprehensive bibliography.

The first part of the book is divided into three main thematic sections: The exile press movements which includes Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican newspapers as well as New York-based anti-fascist, labor and socialist organs; the immigrant press which covers some of the most important immigrant newspapers some of which were based in the state of California and the native Hispanic press based in the states of New Mexico, California, Arizona, Texas and New York. The second part of the publication is a painstakingly elaborated bibliography of periodicals that includes a geographical, a chronological index and a subject index.

The book includes 24 black and white illustrations.

Hombresranas268Peralta Montero, Raphael.
